Jessica watched Spencer eye the hayloft and repressed the urge to laugh. She had a feeling he’d never been camping in his life. Her eyes followed the ladder up to the loft as thoughts of their time in the waterfall filled her head.

Climbing the rungs made of twine, she pulled herself up, then landed on a mound of hay that prickled through her clothing. There were bales piled to the left and right, but it looked like there would be enough room to sleep.

“How is it up there?” Spencer asked.

“It’s something.”

“Hopefully, we’ll soon be out of here.”

“Any idea how we’ll do that?” Jessica called out as she descended the ladder. Silence from Spencer. When she got to the floor, she saw him standing stock still eyeing a snake several yards away.

“Stay there. Don’t bat an eyelash. I’ll help you,” she said in a low voice.

Spencer seemed frozen to his spot. “I’ll take any help I can get.”

Her breath catching in her throat, Jessica scanned the area for a weapon, and her eye fell on an axe hanging on a wooden beam nearby. She took several steps backward and lifted the axe from its perch. The movement caused the snake to move and Spencer cussed, “For shit’s sake.”

Bringing her arm back with force, Jessica threw the axe forward, aiming at the snake. It landed with a hard thud, slicing the snake in half.

Spencer turned to her, the shock in his eyes almost making her giggle. “Where did you learn that skill?” His muscles relaxed.

“Javelin tossing. I was the school champion.” Jessica went over and examined the snake, which had stopped convulsing. She turned to face Spencer; shock still registered in his eyes.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. Something clutched in Jessica’s heart at the genuineness of the statement.

“You’re welcome.”

An awkward silence ensued, and Spencer finally broke it. “Okay, well, we have to figure out our next move.”

“If I can get access to WIFI, I can trace that international number.”

“I have a feeling our hosts can’t help us with that. Maybe they know someone in the area who can. Let’s go see what’s for dinner. Hopefully, not snake.”

Jessica laughed as they headed for the barn door. The late afternoon light peeking in around the edges of the door was bright, so she instinctively closed her eyes as Spencer pushed the door open.

When she opened her eyes, the lush vegetation of the jungle greeted her. “It sure is beautiful here,” she remarked at the vista from the barn. Walking through the land cleared around Heriberto’s home, she stopped at the edge of a ravine. Spencer came to stand beside her.
